Male Hair Loss Causes

More Than Half Of Men Over The Age Of 50 Will Experience Hair Loss. Male Pattern Hair Loss (Androgenic Alopecia) Is The Leading Cause.

Male pattern balding (MPB), is caused by genetic and hormonal factors. This type of hair loss is hereditary, and can come either paternally or maternally. When specific genes are inherited, some level of hair loss will be unavoidable. If you’re a male who is over 50 years old, then you’ve probably already experienced thinning hair or a receding hairline. In some cases, hair loss can become evident in the teens or early adult years.

Every case is different, as is the speed of hair loss. Not everyone will lose all of their hair from pattern hair loss, and there are various stages(often classified under the Norwood Scale). Balding typically begins around the temples and crown, and progresses depending on the pattern type.

How Early Does Androgenic Alopecia Begin?

There’s no hard and fast rule for when pattern balding will become apparent. The process usually begins during adolescence when a high level of testosterone production occurs. Testosterone is a factor, although it’s not technically the cause of pattern balding. The breakdown of the hormone produces DHT. Which is also related to enzyme function. To stop the process, drugs like Propecia and Avodart can be used, depending on a clinical recommendation. When used early, these types of drugs can drastically reduce the appearance of pattern balding and may even stop the process completely.

Drugs that produce similar reactions in the body can also trigger pattern hair loss. Anabolic steroids are notorious for causing hair loss in men, and they can also cause pattern balding in women who use them.
